Ah, digital marketing. Such a broad topic and such an important one too. Why is this so important? According to Google Think, “Mobile makes up 88% of all “near me” searches, with those mobile searches growing at 146% year over year.” Meaning, if you don’t have a strong web presence and show up when people are searching for your product, you’re part of the 12% and that part doesn’t get found.
This blog will review the five major components of digital marketing. It’s important to know that this is a bird’s eye view, an article to get you familiar with the subject. You could spend days, months and years learning about each one and it is the intent of this blog and website to not only cover each topic but to do a deep dive into them so you can go at your own pace. So, let’s get started.
First, let’s cover what the internet is, yes, we all know what the internet is but do you understand how it is structured? Here is a very simplistic way to look at the internet, think of the internet like high school popularity. If you’re middle of the road popular and the most popular kid invites you to lunch and you go, your popularity just increased a little because of the “authority” or popularity of that kid. Conversely, if the least popular kid invites you to lunch and you go, your popularity just went down a little.
The internet works in a similar way. If a website with high authority mentions you or links to you the search engine algorithms reward that and will rank your website a little higher. But, if a website with poor authority refers to you, well, you’re part of the unpopular crowd and your site won’t be as easy to find.
Digital marketing, also known as internet marketing, consists of a number of tactics to drive website visits, brand recognition and sales. Those tactics used are:
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a combination of several factors from content and coding to links and citations that make a website relevant to search engines. Search engines strive to serve up the most relevant sites to searchers.
PPC,Pay Per Click, is a digital medium where the audience is seeking you. In order to gain the conversion, the key is to make sure your brand shows up for the right keywords at the right time, with the right message and corresponding landing pages.
Video marketing is incorporating video or live streaming video into your marketing campaign; on your website, social sites, email marketing or landing pages, that talks about your product, promotes it or you provide tutorials of your product.
Social media marketing is the process of gaining website traffic, leads/sales or attention through social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Linkedin, etc.
E-mail marketing, Electronic Mail Marketing, is a way to get in front of customers and prospects with a commercial message via e-mails.
One key component to remember about internet marketing is the objectives aren’t any different than what is known as traditional marketing 20 years ago. It’s just the tactics are different but the concept is the same.
At the end of the day, all the search engines really want you to do is run your business in a way that promotes your business honestly, without trying trickery or short cuts to get “around the system”.
